DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURES for RESEARCH 2018 | Serving the user base

Explore and design your own workflow for safe data replication

Date:
Friday, September 30, 2016 - 09:00

Summary

The workshop presents and demonstrates data management services developed in the context of EUDAT, a European initiative concerned with the development of such infrastructure. Managing and preserving large-scale data resources is a challenge. EUDAT’s B2SAFE and B2STAGE services guard against data loss, optimize access for users from different regions, and bring large data collections closer to powerful computers for compute-intensive analysis. The trainers participate in EUDAT (https://eudat.eu/), the collaborative Pan-European infrastructure providing research data services, training and consultancy for researchers, research communities, research infrastructures and data centres.

Format/Requirements

During the main part of the session attendees will gain extensive hands-on experience in employing the existing services by working on preinstalled virtual machines. They will get familiar with the APIs and implement small workflows. All training material and further reading will be made available on GitHub afterwards.

We will present some small and short lectures to explain concepts. The focus of the training will lie on extensive hands-on sessions in the data and software carpentry style (http://swcarpentry.github.io/instructor-training/12-live/)."

Attendees need to bring their own laptop preinstalled with ssh tools. Some knowledge on basic bash commands like cd, cp, ls … is required.

Audience

System administrators, developers and scientific programmers from research communities, data centers, and research infrastructures. Knowledge about basic shell-commands is required.
