Wawel is an architectural ensemble consisting of many impressive buildings and fortifications in Krakow - the largest and best known are the Royal Castle and the Wawel cathedral.
A gorgeous assortment of predominantly romanesque, renaissance and gothic architecture, Wawel is a symbol of Kraków's architectural treasures. There are wooden parts of the complex which date back to the 9th century and the castle itself has been described as "one of the most fascinating castles in Europe".
